After repeated deaths of chickens, and the yard suffering from over pecking we decided to build some chicken tractors. Reed ever the protector of his chicken flock, was happy to complete the project. I asked him to watch at least a youtube video to get some ideas. He looked at the pictures I found and went to work. Bruce was his faithful helper.
The structures turned out to be pretty solid. The kids also worked on some clean-up with the promise of s'mores.
I brought home some new workers. Worms. The kids had to get them covered so the birds wouldn't eat them as tasty treats.
The fire burned down and was ready as the day turned to night. We love our flashlights and the kids love cooking marshmellows.
My worms. Livy and I went to Meridian to get a long waited on chain for the combine. We got her ears pierced then we went to the Worm Factory. I purchased 2 lbs of worms and was able to get 60 lbs of worm castings. Both are great for gardening. I tossed the worms into my compost piles. We hurried and covered them with fresh woodchips. I've been watering the piles to make sure there is enough water to keep the worms moving and eating.
The kids were hoping I had brough donuts I assured them I did not. When the box was open this was their response. They did not help me spread the worms but got things for the worms. Thankfully they had been catching chickens earlier in the day so these worms should be safe.
The coop ready for wire.
I'm a big believer in kids having opportunity to figure challenges out. Reed did a great job thinking this through and getting it useable. He made another tractor the next day when I bought him more supplies. So far we have lost no chickens in the coops. We are getting eggs daily now we don't have to find them all over the farm. We are thankful for the energy of youth. Life is good.
