2.21.14 Cub Scout Cake Auction

Let them eat Cake!! Not a problem Marie, we made enough for all your royal court.
The annual cub scout cake auction is the one way the troop raises funds to support it's activities for the whole year. With this in mind and because we have many boys who will be part of this troop and because it is nearly impossible to choose just one delicious, scrumptious, mouth watering cake we did 5!

We narrowed it down to carrot cake- two ladies requested; chocolate cake- I LOVE a good chocolate cake; German chocolate cake- as per grandpa Saunders request; lemon sunshine cake- as per two Saunders stating it is their all time favorite and Greg's repeated request for it; and a strawberry stuffed angel food doesn't that just sound worth $50.00?!

We began making cakes when we all got home Wednesday after the mole ordeal. We made the angel food from a box as it was too much to do from scratch in our limited time frame. A very kind neighbor supplied us with fresh garden carrots for the carrot cake. And for fun, John began mixing up the German chocolate cake mix. We got the papers cut to line the pans and got them baking. We then finally decided what kind of cake design John really wanted to make and began a chocolate cake from scratch. WE got it in the pan only to realize that while we were messing up the German chocolate cake frosting- cooking it without the milk which causes the eggs to scramble which is not right, that we forgot the water for the cake. So we had to add the water and transfer it to another pan. It is always slightly crazy cooking with 2-7 kiddos helping.

Got all the cakes done, cooled, wrapped in plastic and in the freezer and fell into bed. The next day we did frosting. I succumbed to Greg's 100th hint about the lemon sunshine cake and made one of those too. I had fun frosting the cakes and always appreciate aunt Brenda's expertise.
Anna and her friend have fun during the auction.

Did the carpool and got John home to help make his tank cake. We got it assembled and smeared on the left over whipped cream from the angel food cake. Figured out how to pipe icing and made an artistic version of a tank. Aliza took pictures and we carefully loaded the car.

I think we should get a MAJOR award for getting five tall iced cakes and 9 kids to the church on time with no feet, hands, or fingers, or quick brake stops ruining or messing up a cake. PHEW!

The dinner was the best taco bar I've ever been to. The kids had fun and the evening was a success raising enough to fund another year of scouting.
And thanks to April Johnson of Redbarnphotography for these great pictures and for the nice write up for the local paper. We had a second week of being part of the front page of the local paper the Malheur Enterprise
